About TCU

The Tanzania Commission for Universities succeeded the former Higher Education Accreditation Council (HEAC) which was established in 1995 under the Education Act 1995 with a legal mandate to regulate the establishment and subsequent accreditation of private university institutions in the country. Being limited only to private universities, such mandate was considered unfavourable for the promotion of a viable public-private partnership in higher education as stipulated in the National Higher Education Policy of 1999.

2025/2026 Admission Guidebooks

TCU, a corporate body established under the Universities Act of 2005 (Cap. 346), oversees the recognition, registration, accreditation, and monitoring of university-level education in Tanzania. Its mandate includes ensuring a harmonised higher education system across the country.

For the 2025/2026 academic year, TCU has published the Undergraduate Admission Guidebooks, detailing entry requirements and programs offered by higher learning institutions in Tanzania. These guidebooks cater to two main applicant categories: holders of secondary school qualifications (Form Six) and those with ordinary diplomas or equivalent qualifications.
